Reading Psalm 81
1: Sing aloud unto God our strength: make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob.
2: Take a psalm, and bring hither the timbrel, the pleasant harp with the psaltery.
3: Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day.
4: For this was a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob.
5: This he ordained in Joseph for a testimony, when he went out through the land of Egypt: where I heard a language that I understood not.
6: I removed his shoulder from the burden: his hands were delivered from the pots.
7: Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret place of thunder: I proved thee at the waters of Meribah. Selah.
8: Hear, O my people, and I will testify unto thee: O Israel, if thou wilt hearken unto me;
9: There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange god.
10: I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.
11: But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me.
12: So I gave them up unto their own hearts’ lust: and they walked in their own counsels.
13: Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways!
14: I should soon have subdued their enemies, and turned my hand against their adversaries.
15: The haters of the LORD should have submitted themselves unto him: but their time should have endured for ever.
16: He should have fed them also with the finest of the wheat: and with honey out of the rock should I have satisfied thee.
“Oh that my people had harkened unto me”
Intro~There nothing more disheartening than having something to share and no one to share it with. This psalm shows us the longing of the heart of God to share His gifts with His people but sadly the majority miss out on what God has for them in pursuit of their own selfish interests. Lets look in this psalm of Asaph at the very longing of God’s heart.
When we study what God wants to do for His people it should make us like Asaph to want to sing. vs. 1-4
What is it that God longs to do for us?
I. To free us from the worlds bondage vs. 5
II. To carry our burdens and turn them to blessings. vs. 6.
III. To deliver us from what troubles us. vs. 7a
IV. To provide answers to our dark questions. vs.7b
V. To cause us to grow in our bitter circumstances. vs. 7c
VI.That we listen up vs. 8 and straighten up vs. 9
VII. To be our soul provider. vs. 10
In verse 11 and 13 we see the sorrowing heart of God over those that miss their golden opportunity to experience what He longs for each of us to experience. In verse 12 we see they missed their purpose in exchange for self gratification.
VIII. God wanted to be their defense in life. Vs. 14
IX. God longed to bless them with eternal life and treasures. vs. 15
X. God desired to give them the finest things in life.
XI. God desired to satisfy them as only He can as their creator.
Close; The result of missing all God desired to give them their life became meaningless purposeless and useless. What about me and you? Are we trusting God by faith to do with us all He longs to do with us so that He can share all the good gifts with us that comes for above. Lord do not let me miss anything that you want to share with me of thee.
